About Stratford-Upon-Avon

Stratford-Upon-Avon is a small town with a rich history in the heart of England. Although probably best know for it's Shakespearean connection, Stratford has so much more to offer. The town is steep in rich architecture, bringing a delight to the eyes around every corner. Of course Stratford is the birthplace of A William Shakespeare and many of the wonderful Tudor and Elizabethan buildings have some association with Shakespeare's life and family. But Stratford is also a bustling town, with plenty of lovely shopping opportunities and places to stroll, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Stratford sits upon the river Avon, hence it's name. The river Avon runs through the centre of the town and is a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by. Once a busy trade route, linked to the canal systems of the Midlands, the waterways of Stratford are now primarily used for leisure and enjoyment. The Canal Basin is a great place to moor your narrow boat whilst you spend a few hours or days exploring Stratford. The Canal Basin also has a number of permanently moored barges selling a variety of wares from ice creams to oil paintings. There's also a canal boat that offers a unique dining experience as it gently takes you along the river. From here you can also hire various crafts to enjoy the canal and river at your leisure, or let someone else take the strain and join a cruise.
Stratford-Upon-Avon is built on the medieval cross system so finding your way around is easy. There are wall mounted tourist maps available in Rother Street Market and at the top of Bridge Street, the Tourist Information Centre on Bridgefoot also has street maps and local guides available. Of course all of the major sites are well sign posted.
Whilst your in Stratford it's well worth taking a little extra time to enjoy the surrounding area, the beautiful Cotswold's and the countryside and towns and villages of Warwickshire. There are many National Trust properties, open gardens and other attractions including Europe's largest butterfly farm, museums like Falstaff's experience, a genuinely haunted museum!
Of course at some point you'll no doubt want something to eat and drink and here Stratford doesn't disappoint. Stratford-Upon-Avon has a wealth of excellent restaurants, tea houses, pubs and cafe's. You're bound to find something to suit your tastes and needs.
If you're planning a longer stay or simply to overnight in or around Stratford then you will find plenty of accommodation to fit all budgets, from a Doomsday listed Manor House offering luxurious accommodation to a simple family run bed and breakfast.
